Anatomy

Dark melanin-containing mass that is formed at a wound site in response to injury (Markus et al., 2005; Tang, 2009; Evans et al., 2022). Its formation is mainly mediated by hemocytes (Tang, 2009).

Melanotic masses can be caused by genetic manipulations, however this term only represents the wild-type structure produced in response to injury. Consider FBcv:0000446 for the mutant phenotype, which is sometimes also referred to as a 'melanotic tumor' or 'pseudotumor' (Minakhina and Steward, 2006 - FBrf0194475).
